For those of you nervous, or already disrupted, my heart goes out to you, I have friends and family who have also been impacted by all of this, and many are very nervous of their corporate future. Change is coming upon all of us, and like a glacier, I think we are only seeing what's above the surface.
Consider a change. Instead of looking at another corporation that might be gone or bought and dissected in 3 years so a billionaire can make 1%, look to the nonprofit industry and purpose-driven small businesses. There are a LOT of nonprofits, charities, and professional societies. Some are huge, most of them are pretty small.
They need good people. Do they pay as high as some massive corporation? Probably not. But they provide a hell of a lot more than many of these balance-sheet driven companies that see people as line-items. 😇
You have to be flexible, open-minded, and sometimes wear a number of hats. Things can change a lot., and its not always a straight path or perfect textbook execution.
But it comes with a built-in purpose very often, and your skills will transfer well. I personally believe they tend to be filled with less ego and a bit more humility. There are probably a LOT of them in some of your biggest passions, whether it be exercise/sports, nature, birding (ok that's my passion sorry), industry and manufacturing, economic support, helping veterans, and so much more.
These are simple truths that I just feel are missing in a lot of 'business' actions these days. Lots of talk, but actions matter. There are some AMAZING large companies out there, don't get me wrong. But it feels like they are few and far between, and the gap is growing.
I'd be fine waiting 2 more days for my order to come, if it meant even 10, 100, 1000 people kept their jobs. I would be completely fine if we didn't go to Mars right now, and just took better care of the people around us. We can innovate without callousness. We can all sacrifice some convenience. Mars can wait, its been there for a few billion years, it's not going anywhere.
We can innovate without callousness. We can all sacrifice some convenience. We can live lives of purpose and make a good wage, and help others.
And guess what organizations out there are doing just that?
